Aggression Claimed And Denied
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 8. An “open letter to United States servicemen,” issued by the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Peace Council, calls on them to “oppose United States aggression in Southeast Asia.”
It claims an aggressive exercise was held by the U.S.S. Enterprise off the Indonesian coast.
“It is a show of force and power intended to bolster the failing morale of the United States allies and frighten the people of South-east Asia into submission,” says the letter. The nuclear powered aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise did not make a “show of force” off the Indonesian coast, the commander-in-chief of Task Force One, RearAdmiral Bernard M. Strean, told a press conference. He said the operations, described in a Melbourne newspaper as a show of force 150 miles from Djakarta, was in fact an exercise with the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Victorious.
Contrary to the report, the Enterprise did not deviate from her course between Karachi and Fremantle.
The ship did not go within 300 miles of Djakarta, and her aircraft did not go within 180 miles, said Admiral Strean.
