SQUASH TITLES Seeded Players Made To Fight

[From Our Own Reporter]

AUCKLAND, September 8.

Seeded players in the men’s championship dropped games freely when the second round matches were played today in the New Zealand squash rackets championships at the Henderson Courts. However, all eight survived.

W. Deacon (No. 4) and J. S. Walker (6) were taken to five games, and the champion, C. R. Waugh, I. T. Easton, and K. R. Green each lost one game.

An Auckland schoolboy, B. Tietjens, aged 16, has become one of the youngest of national junior champions, and there is little doubt that he is a remarkably fine prospect. In the first round of the A grade event, he accounted for the former New Zealand tennis representative, B. E. Woolf, and today he came within two points of beating Walker, who toured Australia with the 1953 New Zealand team. Close to Victory Tietjens led Walker by two games to one arid 7-5 in the fourth, and looked certain to provide the first major upset of the tournament. But Walker managed to tighten his game, and, eliminating errors and increasing his pace, he struggled home in the fourth game and then played almost flawlessly in the last. Tietjens strokes the ball beautifully and covers the court extremely well. He has already developed deception in some of his shots, notably a forehand played low and short and close to the wall, with an action similar to his drive.

Deacon, a former Australian, met J. Stevens (Auckland), who for two games displayed a touch game at least equal, to that of any New Zealander. He often wrongfooted Deacon with drops and superb drop volleys, exposing Deacon’s comparative lack of winning shots. Exhausting Rallies But after leading by two games to one, he tired badly in the next two. Deacon relied on good length himself, and, intelligently, he often played short in the closing stages. Stevens was unable to bend to his drops as before, was forced into long, exhausting rallies, and lost even though he always seemed to possess the better shots. Waugh, always aiming for the nick and trying to develop good touch, conceded a game to N. Cashmore.

G. L. Bird was in fine form again, beating his Timaru club-mate, F. N. Coe, quite easily. In the quarter-finals on Thursday, Waugh will meet P. Dibley, who has had one win over the champion this year. Easton plays T. C. Johnston, Deacon plays Green, and Bird meets Walker. Two Christchurch players survived in the lower grades. E. R. Morris has reached the quarter-finals in the B grade, and R. H. Donald is a semifinalist in the C grade. Results: —
