NIKORA NOT CONCERNED

Doing Without “Warm-Up” (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 8. Earl Nikora, the New Zealand middle and light-weight boxing champion, is not concerned whether he has a “warm-up” bout before his British Empire title fight at Carlaw Park on November 12, according to his manager, Mr W. Baker. Nikora is matched against Gomeo Brennan, of The Bahamas, for the title left vacant by the retirement of Tuna Scanlan. The Auckland Boxing Association had announced that it was hopeful of importing overseas boxers to meet Nikora before this contest. Mr Baker said that he was “not particularly” keen on matching Nikora and it would depend on the opponent whether he would accept a bout.

“Naturally we would like a warm-up fight,” he said, “but we are quite content to meet Brennan without one.”

Fight For Murphy?

Dion Murphy, the New Zealand professional lightweight champion, may fight a Frenchman, Daniel Tuyen, at Canterbury Court, on September 24. Tuyen, of New Caledonia, has agreed to the terms offered by the Canterbury Boxing Association. The president of the Canterbury association (Mr E. G. Pocock) said that the matching was tentative. He wanted Tuyen’s record before he sent the articles for the fight to Noumea for Tuyen to sign. Murphy is now back in full training. He suffered a hand injury before his last bout against Peter Cobblah, and after that hard-fought contest considered retiring. Murphy has won all his 12 fights as a professional.
