McCormick At Centre For T. Valley Game

The Canterbury Rugby team to play Thames V alley at Lancaster Park on Saturday has four changes from the side that was beaten so decisively by Hawke’s Bav.

W. F. McCormick has been brought into centre to replace the injured D. A. Arnold. McCormick’s place at full-back has been taken by D. C. Leary 7. B. A. Watt, who was not available last Saturday, replaces W. D. Cottrell at first five-eighths..

T he r e are two changes in the forwards. R. Wainohu replaces M. J. Millar at No. 8 and N. G. Cornelius will play on the side of the scrum instead of A. Wyllie.

The injury to Arnold and the suspect fitness of Hutchinson has forced the selectors to bring McCormick into centre, but it is unlikely that much will be lost by this move.

Against South Canterbury McCormick played impressively in the centre position and Canterbury will not be weakened at all by Leary appearing at full-back. The changes in the forwards are much as expected. Wainohu and Cornelius should give the pack the mobility that was so sadly lacking against Hawke’s Bay.

The team is:— D. C. Leary; W. M. Birtwistle, W. F. McCormick, W. J. Thompson; R. C. Moreton, B. A. Watt; L. J. Davis; R. Wainohu; N. G. Cornelius, A. E. Hopkinson, J. Francis, D. J. Graham; J. M. Le Lievre, J. N. Creighton, C. R. Hockley.

The referees’ golden jubilee cup has been awarded to the Shirley Boys’ High School first fifteen. The cup is awarded on the basis of dress, obedience to the rules and general deportment on the field. The St Bede’s College team in the secondary schools grade and the Christchurch Boys’ High School team in the same grade were placed second and third respectively. Centurions’ Match Permission was granted for R. C. Moreton to play for the Centurions against Wellington on October 3. The Centurions will consist of the colts team that toured Australia in June.
