Boards Talk On Oaks By River
An on-the-spot discussion between representatives of the North Canterbury Catchment Board and the North Canterbury Electric Power Board was held yesterday to determine the fate of 20 oak trees on the east side of the southern approach to the Waimakariri State highway bridge. The result will not be made known until the next meeting of the catchment board.
The secretary of the catchment board (Mr W. W. Brough) who visited the site with Mr E. B. Dalmer, the chief engineer, and three other members of the board, said yesterday he was hopeful that agreement would be
reached on the preservation of the trees.
The North Canterbury Electric Power Board asked for the removal of the trees at the instigation of the Waimairi County Council, which wants to instal street lights along the road frontage.
The trees were planted more than 30 years ago by the old Waimakarirl River Trust when the highway bridge was built There are trees on both sides of the road extending for about three chains. The catchment board decided to seak a meeting on the site between its representatives and members of the power board when the power board’s request was held over at last month’s meeting. __
