Albee Play Coming
After seeing his play, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” produced Edward Albee commented: “Don’t be too literal-minded. The play moves away from naturalism. George and Martha may represent the Washingtons and the play may be about the decline of the West.” The play, which will be presented in Christchurch later this year, probably in November, aroused violent controversy in the United States where it was first staged on Broadway in 1962. Albee was accused of blasphemy, obscenity, psychological distortion and historical misrepresentation. It will be performed uncut to comply with the author’s wishes. The Old Tote Company of Australia will present it.
