EMPLOYERS CRITICAL

State Service Holidays (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 8. Criticism of the Prime Minister’s decision to grant three weeks’ holiday for over five years’ service to public service employees is levelled by the Wellington Employers’ Association in its annual report. Justification for this major departure was that the State was following the lead of private employers, the report said. “Nothing, however, has been said to justify this statement, as such leave conditions are by no means typical of private industry,” it said. In about half the- New Zealand workers’ awards three weeks’ holiday was allowed either on the basis of 10 years’ continuous service with the same employer, or as compensation for shift work hours, the report said. “Far from ensuring that conditions of work for State servants should be fairly comparable with those enjoyed by persons in other employment, the Government has once again gone far ahead of most other employers. “This may be expected to have complex repercussions in industry.”
