LARGE ORBITING RESEARCH LABORATORY.—This artist’s sketch shows a 24-man space station now under study at an American space centre. There will be six rooms in each radial arm, and an artificial gravity, about 40 per cent as strong as that on earth, will be provided in the outermost rooms by rotating the station at 4 r.p.m. about the central section. The crew will work “shifts" of several weeks’ duration, and will arrive and depart in winged re-entry vehicles such as the one shown attached to the top of the central section.
