Bellborough Filly’s Fast Sprint

The stock of the Southland sire, Bellborough, have made some major contributions to the records of early two - year - old races in the South Island in the last couple of seasons. A daughter from his first crop was the brilliant Rondabelle. She was unbeaten in her first three of four starts in her first season and her campaign began in the McLean Stakes at the Dunedin spring meeting. Last season the race career of Royal Burgh, a gelded son! of Bellborough, began at the same meeting. He could not match the brilliant Fairlane for pace, but was the best of her rivals in the McLean Stakes and Juvenile Handicap.

Now it seems Bellborough has another daughter which will improve her sire's record in the early two-year-old races this season. It is Belfie, which shaped like a strong McLean Stakes prospect when she gained a runaway win in the Two-year-old Parade at the Otago Hunt meeting at Wingatui on Saturday. Belfie ran four furlongs t from a barrier start in 50 1-5 ■ sec, which is the same time i as Fairlane recorded to win i the McLean Stakes last sea- ■ son and only 1 l-ssec slower ■ than Rondabelle the previous i year. Belfie, a chestnut, is the ■ second foal of the Cassock i mare Flying Field. Her dam yis a half-sister to the brillit ant Field Chief and to Cop--1 perfield, another good winner. Belfie. which will race for i her Green Island breeder, Mr L. S. McDonald, is trained at j Wingatui by W. J. Hewitt.

The best of Belfie's rivals—but four lengths away—was St, Jude, a filly by Harken from Princess Ermine in H. A. Anderton’s team. Close up on St. Jude were Captain Command, Polar and Spanish Fox. Cost 1000 Gns. Captain Command is an attractive colt by Messmate, which was second on the list of leading sires of two-year-olds last season. This youngster, a half-brother to the Australian winner Cloudless and a close relative to Putoko (Brisbane Cup) and the good stayer Coral Arc, cost his Dunedin owner, Mr E. Young. 1000 guineas at the last National Yearling Sales. He is trained at Wingatui by A. L Powell. Polar is a brother to the Riccarton-trained winner Bruin. He is a colt by Chatsworth II out of Panda.

Spanish Fox is a colt by Arragon from the Foxbridge mare Corona Fox. He is a half-brother to the well-per-formed Royal Estate. This youngster was bred by and will race for Mr H. G. McLeod, of Dunedin. The other youngsters in the parade were Pearly Queen, a filly by We Don’t Know from Romani Chai, and a halfbrother, by Cassock, tb Carpenter.

Saturday was a good day all-round for Bellborough’s stock. He was also represented successfully at the hunt meeting by the hacks, Dallabella and Royal Burgh. Another fast filly which will probably represent Bellborough in the McLean Stakes is the Invercargill-trained Kimono. This well-forward youngster from R. E. Humphries’ team is out of Geisha Girl, the dam also of the good class sprinter, Page Boy.
