Grain Ships Diverted
(N Z PA ‘Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, September 7. Three ships carrying 38,000 tons of wheat from Australia to Britain are being (liveried to India, the Commonwealth Relations Office announced i today. I Agreement on the diversion I had been reached after “con■sulfations between the interests concerned.” “The Commonwealth Secretary (Mr Sandys) has expressed his appreciation to (those concerned,” the state- ■ ment added. India is in the midst of one of its worst famines. t Aid is being given by several countries. The diverted ships carrying the wheat were the Miss Chandris, the Nicolas Pateras and the North Devon. Last week India asked that four ships carrying wheat from Australia to Britain be diverted to Indian ports to relieve the food shortage. The request followed an agreement by which India bought an additional 75,000 tons of Australian wheat ; A fleet of 80 ships is preparing to take American wheat to India. But it will take them from 30 to 45 days to reach India and supplies are needed to relieve the shortage before next month's i harvest.
