FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression over the south Tasman Sea is moving quickly south-east and its associated frontal system is expected to lie across the north of the South Island by this afternoon. Forecast: Canterbury.—North-westerlies, fresh to strong in some inland areas, spreading to the coast at times, but moderating later; mainly cloudy; rain in the alps; scattered light falls elsewhere; mild day temperatures. Marlborough.—North-westerlies, strong in exposed areas; scattered rain about the Sounds this morning and some rain likely elsewhere this afternoon or evening; moderate temperatures. Nelson.—Fresh northerlies, tending westerly later; cloudy, with rain developing this morning probably clearing again later, apart from showers in the ranges; moderate day temperatures. Buller and Westland.—Northerlies, moderate to fresh in exposed areas at first, tending westerly; overcast, with some rain this morning, becoming changeable and cooler, with occasional showers this afternoon. Outlook.—All districts: partly cloudy, except for a few scattered showers in eastern areaschangeable, with showers in the west. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
