Diplomacy Guests at a reception given by the Japanese Ambassador to New Zealand (Mr S. Kondo) in honour of the Japan Chamber of Commerce good-will mission last evening saw diplomacy at work. Mr Kondo told them he had spent three years in Denmark before coming to New Zealand six months ago. On his farewell call to a Danish Minister he had been asked not to tell any of Denmark’s butter ' and cheese-making secrets to New Zealand. “I have now been here six months,” said Mr Kondo, “and I' can tell you that yOur butter and cheese is just as good as theirs.” He drew the gathering’s attention to the presence of Mr R. G. F. Kingscote, the honorary consular agent to Denmark. Fine Spring Day It was a mild, sunny spring day in Christchurch yesterday after frosts of 3 degrees both at Harewood and the Botanic Gardens. Temperatures rose from 41 degrees at 9 a.m. at Harewood to reach a maximum of 53 degrees at 1 p.m. There was very little cloud and a moderate northeasterly wind. “Back-Petalled” The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) had to “back-petal” quickly last evening. He was speaking at the reception given by the Japanese Ambassador (Mr S. Kondo) to the Japan Chamber of Commerce good-will mission. It was Mr Kondo’s first official visit to Christchurch. “You must come again later on and see our orange blossom,” said Mr Manning. When he was told by a score of voices that he should have said “cherry blossom” Mr Manning quickly replied “Well, come and see the Welsh daffodils.” Plaque Unveiled A plaque commemorating the opening of a new woolshed on Glentanner station was unveiled by Miss Eileen De Cren, a daughter of the late Mr H. A. Le Cren, an early owner of the station, before a large gathering on Saturday. Speakers included Mr L. Le Cren, grandson of H. A. Le Cren, who gave a history of the station, Mr W. B. Moody (Timaru). representing Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., trustees of the Guinness and Le Cren estates, and Mr I. K. Ivey, manager and part-owner of the station.—(F.O.O.R;) . Popular Vote Officers of the Malaysian income tax department have pledged to intensify their efforts to extract revenue in order to help the Government counter Indonesian “confrontation.” A resolution along these lines was passed today at the annual meeting of the Income Tax Officers’ Union.—Kuala Lumpur, Sept. 7. •
