New Marsden Point Projects fN.Z. Presi Association) WHANGAREI, September 1. A £l4' million power station and a £l5 million petrochemical works employing about 350 workers have been announced as projects for Marsden Point. The general manager of the Whangarei Harbour Board (Mf N. A. Murphy) told the Local Government Commission this at Whangarei today. He said the board was having discussions regarding the establishment of two other large industries of national importance, which together could employ more than 1000 workers. The managing director of the New Plymouth-based firm of Ivon Watkins-Dow, Ltd., Mr D. A. Watkins, asked today if his firm was connected with the £l5 million petrochemical industry mentioned by Mr Murphy, replied: “While it is correct that the company has plans to utilise its recently acquired land at Whangarei as part of its diversification into basic chemical manufacture, no reliable flgutes as to the extent of the operation can be given at this stage.” Economic evaluation of the industry was required first, he added.
