SLOW PATH TO VICTORY

Dyson Scores 16 Points

(N.Z. Press Association)

PALMERSTON Sept 2. In a monotonous low-scor-ing game, Canterbury beat Walrarapa by 50 points to 28 in this afternoon's play of the New Zealand men’s indoor basketbail championships in Palmerston North. Canterbury scored the first five goals and then Walrarapa gained a point with a foul shot. After 10 minutes Canterbury led 11-3 and at halftime had a 21-point margin. Scoring was faster in the second half but it was not until the last five minutes that there was any good attacking and defence. P. Dyson took 16 points for Canterbury. Wellington was too strong for Otago and beat it 55-41. Fast goaling and over-all superiority gave it a half-time lead of 27-16. Otago dropped further behind in the second half. Hawke’s Bay held its lead from the start against Marlborough. After half-time, when the score was 17-9, Marlborough tried to put on the pace but Hawke’s Bay continued to add to its tally and won 55-31. The Auckland B team easily beat Wanganui during the morning’s play by 45 points to 29. Hutt Valley A, although not playing with its usual good form, this morning beat Marlborough by 58 points to 29.
