UNIVERSITY POST

City Scientist For U.K. Dr. J. A. Lawrie, senior scientific officer of the Magnetic Survey, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, has been appointed lecturer in mathematics at the University of Sussex. Dr. Lawrie, an old boy of the Napier Boys’ High School, gained a bachelor of science degree at Auckland University College and a master’s degree in mathematics at the Canterbury University College, and then joined the survey in 1950. From 1959 to 1961, Dr. Lawrie studied at the University of Exeter and graduated doctor of philisophy. Dr. Lawrie’s main interest has been in the mathematics of problems associated with geomagnetic disturbances, and this was the subject of his thesis for his ' doctor's degree. In his new position he will lecture mainly in applied mathematics. . He expects to leave Christchurch about the end of next month and take up his new post in January.
