Social Security Benefits

Sir, —I am now 76 and remember all the governments from Richard Seddon up. He was classed as Liberal, but was more for Labour. He

was classed as the workman’s friend- He started the pension at 15s a week, and the last words he said were: “I will never be satisfied until I get. the old people £1 a week.” But he never lived to do so, and it remained at that until Labour took over in 1935. From then on, as the cost of living rose, so did the pension. The National Party had nothing to do with the pension rise. It was the cost of living that caused it to rise and will again. The National Party would stop-it if they could. They have partly done so by making us pay doctors’ fees. They try to tell us it does not come under Social Security, but it does.—Yours, etc., O. BRYSON. September 2, 1964. ~

Sir, —In my previous letter I wrote: “Does lie forget it was Sir Sydney Holland who doubled the universal superannuation payment?” not “doubted,” as appeared:— Yours, etc, TOM BRYCE. September 1, 1964.
