Variable Demand For Hereford Bulls

The demand was not very strong when the South Island Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association held its second annual bull sale at Temuka yesterday in association with a show of cattle. The bulk of the bulls in the offering were run two-year-olds and only about 30 per cent of these found buyers at auction and not infrequently auctioneers could not get past the upset price.

A North Island Hereford breeder of long standing who was the show judge, Mr D. Tynan, of Te Kuitl, said that considering the difficult season the cattle had been through they were a good sample of the breed, but he noted that there was some variation in the standard of the selection which came before him, and in the subsequent sale buyers showed a preference for the cattle of a few breeders who had a reasonably good sale. This year the entry was considerably bigger than at the first sale with 57 catalogued for the sale and another six listed for showing only. The cattle were drawn from Murchison in the north to Otago and Southland in the south and some were showing the marks of a period of short feed supplies.

Average Price Of the SI bulls of all ages which came before buyers at the sales 22, or 43 per cent, were sold at auction for a total of lust short of 4000gns and an average of 179 l/3gns each. Nine of the 11 two-year-old led bulls offered were sold at auction for prices ranging from 110 to 3Sogns and an average of 192gns. Last year values for this class of bulls ranged from 150 to 240gns. Top price of the day was paid in this section for Heathstock Olypmlc 13th from the Hawarden property of Heathstock Downs, Ltd. For this bull out of a Wllencote cow bred by F. E. Humphreys and Son, of Gisborne, and sired by Kaitoa Olympic, the first herd sire at Heathstock, Pearse Bros., of Clinton, paid 350gns. In the show class for led two-

year-olds Heathstock Olympic 13th was placed second to Eriskay Mercury 12th from W. T. Holms and Company, of Walmahaka. Invercargill, whose bull was also judged to be the champion of the show. Mr Holms is the third generation of a family which has been breeding Herefords for 75 years. His champion, which brought SOOgns, is by Pukeroa Mercury 9th, which he bought at the national Hereford sale three years ago for 850gns. and out of a cow of his own breeding, Eriskay Lydia Ist. Mr Tynan said that he liked the champion's squareness and build. He was also obviously a good walker and traveller. Mr Tynan said that the sort of bull he was looking for was a utility beast that would get out on the hill and would stand up to varying soil and climatic conditions. The third placed bull in the class, Allandale Craigie, from H. G. Jamieson, of Allandale station. Fairlie, sold for 180gns. Unled Bulls Only 11 of the 37 unled two-year-olds were sold under the hammer. The 11 brought from 80 to 270gns compared with 70 to 200gns for the same class of bulls a year ago. The average for the class this year was 152gns. Here again the top price went to Heathstock Downs, Ltd., which had the prizewinning pair of run two-year-olds. These two bulls were each bought by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., for P. P. L. Dillon, of Blenheim, for 270 and 250gns. Heathstock had three other sales in the section at prices from llOgns to ISOgns. W. T. Holms and Company were again to the fore with a sale made to the National Mortgage and Agency Company on account of the Rakaia Island Run Company at 210gns. E. W. Hall Trust, of Maungatf. which filled second and third places in the pairs of two-year-olds, sold one of these bulls for 130gns to the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Associa-

tion for J. Lundy fOkuku) and it also had a sale at ISOgns. The only three-year-old bull. Haka Trojan 25th, from J. L. Falconer and Company, of Patearoa, Central Otago, was sold to Wright, Stephenson and Company on account of Tara Downs. Ltd. (Greenhills) for 300gns, and one of the two yearlings offered, also from Falconer and Company, was purchased by Donald Reid and Company (Balclutha) for a client at 250gns. The other yearling, also from the same vendors, which was first prize winner In Its class, was passed in for SOOgns. Showing Valuable Speaking at the presentation of trophies at the end of the sale, Mr Tynan described stud cattle breeding as a major New Zealand industry and strongly opposed suggestions that the show business should go. But for showing, he said, cattle would not be what they were today. In presenting the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company's cup for the champion led two-year-old, Mr W. S. Minehan said that his company was in process of carrying out expansions costing £lm at its Pareora works, which included a beef house that would be able to kill up to 200 cattle a day.
