SUPERIOR HOCKEY
Indians Net 7 Goals (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Sept. 1. The touring Indian Olympic hockey team was untroubled to beat the Nordon Cup holder, Poverty Bay, 7-0, at Gisborne today, after leading 4-0 at halftime. On a dry, hard ground which suited their style of play, the Indians were able to dictate their own terms for most of the match. If it had not been for a number of brilliant saves by the Poverty Bay goal-keeper, T. Urselmann, and the solid work on defence by the two full-backs, D. Lewis and W. Pere, the score would have been considerably higher. Lewis played a magnificent game and seemed to have the measure of the Indian tactics. Although at the start of the second half the Poverty Bay players spent more time in Indian territory than on defence, they only looked as if they might score on one occasion and then a shot rolled across the front of the goal. The typical stop-and-bash New Zealand game turned on by the Bay was in sharp contrast to the visiting team, which used its ball control, spectacular stick-work,. short passing and. brilliant backtackling to advantage. India’s goals were scored by Bandu Patil (3), Haripal Kaushik (3), and Pripithal Singh.
