SWIMMING Need For Better Administrators
Lack of capable administrators at club level in Canterbury swimming appeared to be general, says the president of the Canterbury Swimming Centre (Mr M. R. Duckman ton) in the annual report of the centre.
He suggests the enlisting of senior competitive swimmers into the administrative ranks and the amalgamation of two or more of the numerically smaller club? as ways of overcoming the shortage. “Too often individual posi-
tions in clubs are passed down year after year in sympathy with the holder of that position,” says Mr Duckmanton. “The time has come for all clubs to realise that the best man or woman available is the one to appoint, not necessarily the one who held the post last season.” Mr Duckmanton expresses his disappointment at the reaction to the call for nominations for the centre’s new administrative posts—only seven of the 19 clubs replied —and calls for everyone to give the scheme a fair trial. On a happier note, Mr Duckmanton notes the healthy progress of the swimmers’ committee.
“The group has plans for a general meeting of all swimmers in the centre and once they have settled down they should be a tower of strength to working committees, as well as learning to be able administrators of our sport,” he says.
