Inquiry On Mt. Eden
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) has directed a departmental inquiry into conditions at Mount Eden maximum security prison, after allegations contained in an article entitled “The Black Shame of Mount Eden” published in a weekly newspaper.
During discussion on the Justice Department Estimates in Parliament tonight; Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp., Waitakere) said the article made some starting accusations, one of them being that first offenders spending a term in Mount Eden left it as hardened criminals.
“I have no doubt that this report is grossly exaggerated,” Mr Hanan said.
“In reports of this kind, a great injustice is often done to officials. However,. I have directed the department to investigate the report.”
