NUCLEAR BLASTS
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GENEVA, September 1. Nuclear explosives could be used for civil engineering and scientific projects in the near future as a result of the research conducted under the United States “Project Plowshare,” the Internaitonal Atoms for Peace conference heard in Geneva today. A report by Dr. Gerald W. Johnson and Dr. Gary H. Higgins of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, California, said the use of nuclear explosives could result in major savings in the cost of the projects. They may also make possible recovery of petroleum products from mineral resources which could not otherwise be economically recoverable.
