Suburban Cabbages
Sir, —I received from Canada a cutting, “You’re a V.1.P.,” which might hearten other cabbages like me: “It’s a good thing to be humble. But, having said that, I do hope you realise just how important you are. Perhaps you’ve neyer achieved wonderful success. It’s unlikely that you’re a film star, and maybe your husband has never been a Lord Provost. But suppose you’re the wife of a labourer or a shop assistant—how necessary . you are! It’s you who funs the house. You see that there’s something to eat. You change a house into that very wonderful place—home. I hope you never think too highly of yourself. But as long as you love somebody and somebody loves you, my goodness, how very important you are.”— Yours, etc., ELIZABETH B. August 31, 1964.
