HELP FOR COMPUTER
Boys 9 Holiday Work (N.Z. Pres* Aiiociation) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. In a very indirect way, two Hutt Valley High School students can say that they are helping in their term holiday jobs to save the country thousands of pounds. Their duties involve the preparation of material for consumption by a computer upon which rests the decision or the route of the proposed Auckland-Hamilton motorway. Their work and, of course, that of the Treasury Department’s computer, will save the Ministry of Works roading division an estimated five man-years of laborious desk toiling.
Working on a zonal basis for recording traffic density and travelling times on various routes between point “A" and point “B,” 17-year-old John Orman and 16-year-old John Askwith will, by the time college resumes, have prepared information for between four and five thousand punch cards.
