NEW ZOO BABY

Chimp Fed By Bottle (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 31. Abandoned by its mother shortly after birth on Thursday, a baby chimpanzee at the Auckland Zoo is being bottle fed night and day. The chimpanzee, a female weighing 31b 31oz, is the first of its species to be born at the zoo. The mother, one of the performing chimpanzees brought from Britain, appeared to be fond of its offspring, but suddently started dragging it around the cage.

The zoo director, Mr D Wood, and Mrs Wood, took the baby chimpanzee into their home and fed it with milk and glucose every two hours.

Mrs G. Dean, wife of the director of city parks, took over the feeding chore and tonight after a sleep and a feed in front of an electric heater the young chimpanzee was moved into the zoo hospital.

Mr Dean said the chimpanzee would be a splendid attraction at the zoo, but it would be a considerable time before it could be displayed.
