25 Sheep Killed By Dogs

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, August 31. Marauding dogs are believed to have been responsible for the killing of 25 sheep in the BarrytowD district during the week-end.

They were discovered dead on Mr Graeme Rae’s farm a few miles north of the Barrytown settlement on the Coast road. A passing van driver noticed some of the sheep and warned Mr Rae, who put the killing tally at 25 and possibly more. He said he had lost sheep in similar fashion before but never as many in one sweep. Some were found with their throats slashed wide open. Others were apparently driven until they collapsed and died

from exhaustion. A small group was found drowned in a creek. The loss was a financial blow for Mr Rae, a young farmer. A number of the sheep were in-lamb ewes, due in just a few days. Several lambs were also cut down by the attackers. Mr Rae saw little hope of saving anything, including the word. Much of this was ripped off and scattered over the farm. Mr Rae plans to shoot on sight any stray dogs appearing on the property.
