COAL USE SURVEY

Answer Sought To Questions The response in Christchurch to the Mines Department’s fuel survey questionnaire has so far been disappointing, Mr K. C. Thornhill, district fuel engineer to the department, said yesterday. “So far, only about 20 per cent of the domestic consumers we approached have returned their questionnaires, and only about 30 per cent of coal merchants,” said Mr Thornhill. “Industrial users have been better—they have returned between 50 and 60 per cent of their questionnaires. “While the individual consumer may not benefit directly through sending in his ' questionnaire, he stands to gain much indirectly,” said Mr Tornhill. “When we know what the customer wants, we shall set about trying to give him it.” Coal merchants stood to gain more directly from the survey, and the response from them should be near 100 per cent, he thought. All coal merchants, and all of a random sample of domestic consumers chosen for the survey, had now been approached, but approaches were still being made to industrial consumers.
