Records Fall At Olympic Trials

(NJI.Pui.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, August 30. United States swimmers showed their strength with two world records and one American record as the national Olympic trials got under way this week-end.

Chet Jastremski and Donna' de Varona broke their own world records for the men’s 200 metres breaststroke and the women’s 400 metres individual medley today. Yesterday, Mike Austin broke the American 100raetre freestyle record In a qualifying heat—though he was beaten off into third place in the final in a slower time. The trials last for six days with swimmers from across the nation battling for 38

men's and 31 women’s places in the team. The first four in the finals of the men’s events and the first three in the finals of the women’s events automatically become members of the team, but as has happened where a swimmer finishes in the first three or four in different events, other swimmers who finished in lower places become team members. New Times Today the 23-year-old Jastemski, an Indiana medical student, broke his 200-metre breaststroke record of 2min 29.65ec in a qualifying heat with a time of 2min 28.2 sec. The 17-year-old Donna de Varona, from California, broke her 400 metres individual medley record by more than a second in winning the final. Her time was smin 14.9 sec. In the other final of the day Roy Saari came close to Murray Rose’s listed 400 metres freestyle record of 4min 13.5 sec.
