Nelson Turns Tables On Auckland In Titles

(New Zealand Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH, August 31. From an 11-0 lead, Auckland dropped back to lose its game against Nelson by four points in this afternoon’s play of the New Zealand men’s indoor basketball championships in Palmerston North. Nelson beat Auckland 51-47.

Nelson had the advantage of an extremely strong defence against a mediocre one for Auckland. This strong Nelson defence was responsible for much free scoring. Auckland’s slow controlled game was its undoing, and it lost many opportunities. C. Cotton was top scorer for Nelson with 18 points, and B. McTavish took 14 points for Auckland. A superior Wellington side scored an easy victory over Palmerston North, beating it by 55-34. The home team started well, but as the game progressed its fitness decreased, letting Wellington in for many easy shots. The Auckland B team beat Wairarapa by 56-27.
