SUGGESTED SAVINGS

The Heathcote County Council yesterday appealed to all consumers in its area to conserve electricity. The chairman of the council’s electricity committee (Cr. E. L. Tyndall) said that if consumers observed two rules, the Electricity Department’s request for a 10 per cent reduction in consumption could be achieved with little hardship. “The first rule,” he said, “is to use electric heaters and under-floor heating two hours less each day, and where possible, substitute alternative heating. “Second, do not use hot water if cold water suffices," said Cr. Tyndall.

The county had already introduced, where possible, some control on water heating. Street lighting, too, Is being restricted. Lights are being switched on later in the evenings and off earlier in the mornings as safety permits. An emergency meeting of the Riccarton Borough Coun-

ell would be called in the next few days to consider whether compulsory cuts would be made in the borough, said the Town Clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant). “Some action will have to be taken, as it is quite evident that consumption is not being; reduced at present,” he said. I ‘“We will probably follow the! same line as the City Council." The Lyttelton Borough Council last evening gave I its electricity committeepower to take any action necessary to acquaint resi-l dents of the need to reduce consumption. It is not in- 1 tended to impose restrictions at this stage. The engineer-manager ofi the Central Canterbury Elec-1 trie Power Board (Mr S. E.l Slatter) said last night that I no firm decision had yet been; made on rationing, but the matter wotdd be discussed i today with other authorities. The present consumption I was well above the desired' allocation.
