Peking Trip Explained \ (H.Z. Press Association! WELLINGTON, August 31. Mr H. S. Jansen, the Lower Hutt physicist, who returned yesterday from an international science symposium in Peking, said this afternoon he could not understand what all the fuss over his trip was about. There was nothing mysterious about his accepting the invitation, he said. “I was invited to go and no objection was raised by the Institute of Nuclear Sciences or the D.S.I.R. as a whole.” Mr Jansen was accompanied to Peking by Professor G. Mackie, senior lecturer in geology at Auckland University.

Mr Jansen said the paper he presented at the symposium dealt with radiocarbon dating. It was a purely archaeological type of paper—work published by the D.S.I.R. and available to all, he said. He said his trip, a private one by invitation only, had been a great experience and in Peking there was no animosity from the Chinese over the fact he was from a country outside the Communist bloc.

Fair Attendance. —A total of 73.460 persons has visited the New Zealand Industries Fair and National Food Fair in Christchurch. Yesterday the total number admitted was 7286, compared with 7281 on the same day last year.
