The Canterbury University Council yesterday paid tributes to Professor S. R. Siemon, head of chemical engineeering for the last 20 years, who has resigned to- become professor of chemical engineering at the University of Melbourne. “He took a large part in the transfer of the School of Engineering; took a prominent part in Professorial Board discussions, particularly on entrance; and was active on school boards and scientific and industrial committees,” said the Acting ViceChancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips). “He is a professor whom we can ill afford to lose as a scholar, administrator, and man.” Dr. R. W. Medlicott (Dunedin) has been elected chairman of the New Zealand branch of the Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, and Dr. J. D. Denford (Dunedin) has been elected secretary-treasurer. The Christchurch representatives on the branch committee are Drs. J. R. E. Dobson and T. E. Hall. Sir Edmund Hillary will leave Auckland this evening bound for Chicago and the start of his Himalayan Schoolhouse Expedition. After discussions on finance grants in Chicago and London, Sir Edmund Hilary will arrive in Katmandu on September 9. —(P.A.)
