HYDATIDS CAMPAIGN

More Money Wanted The campaign for eradication of hydatids must have full national support and the National Hydatids Council must be enabled to get ahead with its job without the hindrance of inadequate finance or insufficient cooperation, said the chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board (Sir John Ormond). He told the annual meeting of the electoral committee of the board that the board appreciated the financial problems of the Hydatids Council in its progressive eradication campaign and had promised another £lO,OOO provided the Government increased its annual grant to £50,000. For the years 1963 to 1967, the country as a whole has allocated £153,734 for hydatids research—the Government £76,868, Meat Board £38,434, Wool Board £23,059 and Dairy Board £15,373.

“The Meat Board in 1960, to meet extra costs involved, voted £lO,OOO to the council,” said Sir John Ormopd. “The Meat Board this year has appreciated the financial problems of the Hydatids Council in its progressive eradication campaign and has promised another £lO,OOO. “If we are to see this vitally important project carried through to success, the Government must surely enlarge its support. This is important nationally from both health and economic considerations. The economic loss by way of livers alone is estimated at nearly £1 million a year.”
