Promoted Hacks In Wanganui Double

(New Zealand Press Association)

Wanganui, Aug. 30. Two recent hack graduates, Blue Defaulter and Dhuran, won the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Blue Defaulter was having his first start in open company when he won the F. F. Newman Handicap, in which he was well back in the early running and still had eight or nine ahead of him turning for home. He had to change ground when lodging his challenge, but still had too much strength under his lightweight for Big Bill and Top Lad, which had both challenged the leaders on the turn and were fighting it out between themselves until Blue Defaulter arrived on the scene.

African and Beau Kura both finished fast, but too late, for fourth and fifth placings and Capless was also running on well next ahead of Bright Coral, which had every chance, and Coral Reef. Lucky Son weakened from the lead to ninth ahead of Bagush and - Courtel. Dhuran was in or near the lead all the way in the Flying Handicap, and he stayed on too strongly for the three-year-old Fairford, which made a bold bid after conceding ground at the start. That’s That was a close third ahead of Smoky Bay, which disputed the lead to the turn. Very Dry battled on for fifth ahead of Donald Dinnie. which had every chance, and the weakening Dr. Jekyll. Clayton King and Gold Splice were both well beateh.

The weather was fine, but the track was heavy after rain during the week- The attendance was only fair. Results:
