BADMINTON Boatwood, Mrs Fowler Win S.I. Singles Titles

P. V. Boatwood and Mrs W. Fowler captured the men’s and women's singles titles in the South Island badminton championships, which concluded at the Skeilerup Hall on Saturday night. This was Boatwood's second successive win in the singles, as he won the same event at Tlmaru last year. The losing finalists were A. G. Duckmanton and Miss B. Gormack. Use of the entire court by both players made the men's final a most Interesting game. Both played spectacular badminton, producing delicate drop shots, agile retrieving, and controlled smashing as the trend of play from defence to attack demanded. Boatwood’s excellent clearing length seldom allowed Duckmanton opportunity to really smash effectively, and was the key to the definite edge he held throughout the match.

By comparison, the women's final was not as interesting as it might have been, mainly because Mrs Fowler took complete control with deep, high clears and tight drop-shots. The women’s doubles was a fluctuating game, but Misses N. Baty and Wilson’s ability to control the shuttle close to the net proved to be the winning factor. Misses Gormack and Davidson relied too much on smashing winners from anywhere on the court and their serving was inconsistent. Serving was the decisive point in the men’s doubles between D. Reid and P. Boatwood and B. Wylie and A. Duckmanton. The first set, won by Wylie and Duckmanton, 1510, was due to their superior combination. Then Reid and Boatwood struck form and combined admirably to take the second set, 15-9. They were leading 13-6 in the final set, but Wylie and Duckmanton fought back to draw level and then forge ahead to a setting. Reid and Boatwood saved countless match points to finally lose, 18-15. Fortunes fluctuated In the mixed doubles match, won by Miss N. Baty and D. Reid. Reid’s ability to change the pace of the play turned the game in his and Miss Baty’s favour.
