66 TO GAIN LEAD
Nichols Heads Carling (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) BIRMINGHAM (Michigan), August 30. Bobby Nichols, of America, went into the lead in the 200,000-dollar Carling world golf championship yesterday. He had a four-under-par 66 in the third round, and was two strokes ahead of Arnold Palmer.
George Archer, who led in the first two days, collapsed in the third round, and Nichols, winner of the P.G.A. championship, and Palmer were the only golfers still under par. Nichols had a 54-hole score of 206, and Palmer 208. Dick Sikes moved up to third place, on 210. The final round tomorrow appeared likely to be a struggle between the two power-golfers, but several other contestants remained close enough to pose a threat if they had trouble with the huge, 6907-yard Oakland Hills course. R. J. Charles, with a third round of 70, was eight strokes behind Nichols, on 214. Leading scores were:— 206—R. Nichols (U.S.), 72, 68, 66. 208—A. Palmer (U.S.), 70, 71, 67. 210— R. Sikes (U.S.), 69, 72, 69. 211 — G. Player (South Africa), 72, 72. 67. 212 P. Butler (Britain), 71, 69, 72; D. January (U.S.), 70, 74, 68; K. D. G. Nagle (Australia), 70, 71, 71.
