The New Zealand driver, Bruce McLaren, set a new lap record of 103.10 miles an hour in the Royal Automobile Club’s Tourist Trophy race at Goodwood on« Saturday. McLaren, driving a. CooperOldsmobile, set the record In the second lap during a tussle with the world champion, Jim Clark (Britain). The mark was nearly three miles an hour faster than the old record, but the pace proved too hot, and McLaren had to retire later with a slipping clutch. Clark was also forced out of the running with steering trouble. The former world champion, Graham Hill, of Britain, in a Ferrari, won the race for the second successive year. David Piper (Britain) was second, and an American, Dan Gurney, third. John Surtees, of Britain, escaped with only minor injuries after being involved In a 100 miles an hour crash during the early struggle for the lead. Trying to avoid Innes Ireland’s Ferrari, which had gone into a spin, Surtees’s Ferrari clipped the banking, came back on to the track and collided with another car. Surtees suffered concussion and bruises.
