Badminton N.I. TITLES DECIDED
Singles To R. Purser (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. New Zealand's leading badminton player, R. H. Purser (Auckland), won the North Island championship in Wellington last evening. He beat the Wellington champion, D. B. Higgins, 15-10, 9-15, 15-1. The top seed in the women's singles, Miss G. K. Tompkins, also won, defeating her fellow Über Cup international, Miss M. Moorhead, 12-11, 11-7. The university pair, Llm Ee Chiat, of Sarawak, and the South African, F. Coetzer, came through to. win the men’s doubles, beating the Wellington title-holders, Higgins and E. R. Harvey, 15-10, 15-7. Miss Tompkins and Miss Moorhead, top seeds In the Women’s doubles, had no difficulty in beating Miss A. Glenie (Auckland) and Miss E. Meyer, 15-3, 15-1. In the mixed doubles, Purser and Miss Glenie had a comfortable 15-3, 15-6 win over Harvey and Miss Tompkins. Cup Retained. Auckland coasted to a 15-1 win over Otago in the Wisden Cup Interprovincial badminton final in Wellington on Saturday. Auckland retained the trophy for the sixth successive year. —(P.A.)
