WAIPARI RETIRED
“The Press” Special Service MATAMATA, August 27. The great galloper, Waiparl, has been retired. His trainer, J Wickliff. of Te Awamutu, said today that Mr J. G. Sutherland has decided to finish the gelding's racing days as he did not wish to strain him as an old horse. Waiparl raced with great success tn both New Zealand and Australia and won just under £32,008 in stakes. He is one of the best of the stock of the great sire. Summertime, to race in New Zealand. Altogether he raced 131 times. He ran three times as a two-year-old without winning and twice this season as a 10-year-olfi, but won at every one of his other seven seasons. In his Australian campaigns he won five races, ran six seconds. five thirds and two fourths from 25 starts and earned £14,660. Altogether he won 17 races, ran 17 seconds and the same number of thirds and eight fourths. His New Zealand earnings were £17,190, and among his many successes was the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie twice. He also won the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick over a mile and five furlongs, the furthest he raced successfully. Waipari was bred by Mr Sutherland. who also bred his halfbrother, Aro. She was by the Sydney Cup winner. Contact. Aro is back in work with Wlckiiff and is thriving.
