Preliminary Tests For Tennis Juniors

J. Mitchell, of Boys’ High School, and J. Martin (St. Bede’s), now Canterbury’s two leading junior tennis players, will have a preliminary trial of strength for the season today. They will meet in the final of the Canterbury junior hard court tournament at Wilding Park.

Neither was troubled by his semi-final opponent yesterday. The New Zealand under 17 champion and Canterbury under 19 champion, Mitchell, made some errors in the first set when he beat R. Rodgers (Technical College), 6-3, 6-1, but he was usually in control. Rodgers produced some fine passing shots but nullified them with immediate mistakes. Martin beat the West High School boy, W. Davis, 6-1, 6-3, in a hard-hitting game in which he was generally superior. Mitchell is seeded first, Martin second. Mitchell and Miks G. Thompson (Rangi-ruru) have chances to win three under 19 titles today. The top seed in the under 17 boys’ singles, G. McEachran, of Gore, was eliminated by another Southlander, P. Fahy, in the semi-finals. A Woodlands boy who attends St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, Fahy won, 6-0, 3-6, 9-7, with admirable determination. He had two match points against him at 5-6 in the third set which he won with passing shots down the line.

McEachran did not play as well as he did when he was under 15 runner-up in both the Canterbury junior and Easter tournaments this year. In the final Fahy will meet D. Meredith, seeded fourth to Fahy’s third. Meredith did most of the attacking when he beat the second seeded D. Archer, of Rakaia, 6-2, 6-4. First And Fourth J. Bishop, seeded first, will play P. Hopkinson, of Kaiapoi, fourth, in the under 17 girls’ final. In the semi-finals Bishop placed one but of McLean’s, reach to win, 6-1, 6-3, but Hopkinson had a tense battle with J. Habgood, of Lincoln. Habgood was aggressive at the start to win the first set 6-1 but Hopkinson won the next two sets of long rallies, 7-5, 7-5. Local players got the better of Southlanders in the under 15 singles sections. Seeded first, D. Blackwell was in fine form when he beat R. Webster (Southland), 6-0, 6-1, and L. Martin beat J. Steele (Southland), 7-5, 6-3, That match was very even with some fine stroking. R. Legge and R. Dillon, who will meet in the under 15 girls’ final also both beat Southlanders in their semifinals. Legge hit harder and had a better service than E. Thomas but Dillon beat .S. Stirling by clever court-craft and well-placed lobs, although

Stirling had the more attractive strokes.

B, McDowell (Southland) had an easy semi-final win over W. Young to qualify for the under 13 boys’ final but B. Morrison had a much harder task. He beat the tiny K. Lewis, who has impressed in this tournament,' 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, because he was a bit bigger and seemed to have a little more experience.Kesults: under If Bays’ singles Semi-finals.—J. Mitchell beat R.
