One of Canterbury’s most notable swimmers, C. C. McFadden,, will return to Christchurch soon to become resident professional coach at the new Jellie Park pool. Mr McFadden, who is 23, has been assistant to Mr P. I. Krause at the Parnell pool, Auckland, for the last two years. His brother, G. H. McFadden, is professional coach at 'Wharenui. The start of Mr McFadden’s work at Jellie Park hinges on the completion of the pool. It is hoped that it will be ready before Christmas.
The Waimairi County Council, which has appointed Mr McFadden to the post, is to appoint a pool superintendent as well at Jellie Park. The council has granted Mr McFadden exclusive rights to the learners’ pool during certain hours; it will amount to about 29 hours a week. The coach will have his own office at the pool. Purple Patch Mr McFadden retired from competitive swimming three years ago with eight national freestyle titles and a place in the 1958 Empire Games team to his credit. During the years 1958-59-60 he became the most celebrated distance swimmer produced by New Zealand.
