3 COMBINED CHURCHES

Anglican And Methodist A proposal for a joint Anglican-Methodist church at Avonhead was anproved yesterday by the North Canterbury Methodist Synod: Mention was made of similar proposals for.Masham and Marshland. The proposal at Avonhead was that . the Methodist Church should build a hall beside St. Christopher’s Anglican Church and that both denominations would use both buildings. Initially, Anglican and Methodist services would be held at separate times on Sunday mornings, and there would be a united service each Sunday evening. Separate Sunday schools and Bible classes would be held, but other youth work would be on a joint basis. The superintendent of the Riccarton Methodist circuit (the Rev. J. D. Grocott) said that a similar arrangement was under consideration for St. Stephen’s Methodist Church. Masharn. The Rev. F. G. Glen said the Shirley circuit had received a formal approach for a similar arrangement with the Anglican church at Marshland. The Avonhead proposal will now go before the Methodist Conference.
