Gifts From Savings Bank
Cheques totalling £2OOO were given to representatives of 42 organisations by the Canterbury Savings Bank yesterday at a presentation function in the Provincial Council Chambers.
Mr M. J. Russell, chairman of the board of trustees, said he hoped that the bank would be able to give away much more money as it went along. He emphasised that the amounts given yesterday were the results of only one year’s trading. With support from the community, he had no doubt that the amounts to be given away would be increased. Already the bank had
£5,620,000 and 20,750 depositors. Thanking the bank on behalf of all the organisations which had received gifts, the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) said he was looking forward to similar occasions taking place for as long as the age of the Provincial Council Chambers. The photograph shows, from left, Mr A. I. Pitt (secretary of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing), Mr K. T. Sugden (secretary of the Glenelg Health Camp), Miss E. Bennett (assistant secretary of the Girl Guides Association), Mr C. A. Rattray (president of the Canterbury and West Coast Tuberculosis Association), and Mr M. J. Russell (president of’ the board of trustees of the Canterbury Savings Bank), who presented the cheques.
