Rail And Postal Charges
Sir,—“By the Wayside” is again off the beam. Clothes and the concessions granted are paid for by the employees themselves. They are treated as offsets to the wage rates arrived at. Private enterprise also gives many concessions to individuals which dre ultimately paid for by customers. Admittedly all governments have . to treat such' charges as revenue. The only difference is that National on two successive occasions has increased these charges immediately “after” two elections. Housewives and pensioners should never forget that the exorbitant price- they pay for coal is not the fault of the coal merchant but entirely due to freight rises consistently imposed by this National Government. In my long experience in New Zealand no South Island member has done more to retard the progress of his province and the South Island as a whole than Mr McAlpine.—Yours etc., TOM BRYCE.
