“Washday At The Pa”
Sir,—The Minister of Education has announced in the “Education Gazette” that a primary school bulletin is to be withdrawn from the schools, and your news columns have informed us that a private flrm is to publish the same booklet for sale. Some questions naturally arise from these two statements. Because many teachers have found the material and photographs in the book to be very valuable in their classrooms, will headmasters be able to purchase copies of the firm’s publication from funds ■ provided by the Education Department under the free textbook scheme? WiH a school committee, acting on the recommendation of its headmaster, be able to buy copies, either from its own funds or on the usual. £ for £ subsidy basis arranged by the Education Board.— Yours, etc., HEADMASTER. August 17, 1964.
[The Director of Education (Mr A. E. Campbell) said: “If the, bulletin’ were to be republished in its-' present form by a private firm it would obviously be wrong for public money to be spent to replace the copies that have been withdrawn from the classroom; and, if necessary, the department would take steps to prevent this happening.”]
