RESCUE OF SEAMAN
Union Makes Presentation (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 25. A ship’s cadet received a surprise yesterday afternoon when seamen presented him with a sextant in appreciation of his rescue of a drowning man.
The cadet, Mr Jon Mayson, of Dannevirke, jumped into the water at Port Adelaide on the night of April 4 and saved Mr V. Agnew, who had fallen from the Union Company ship, Walhetno. Mr Mayson had to pull Mr Agnew about 70 yards through the water to a wharf ladder. After seamen in Wellington learned of the rescue they decided to make a surprise presentation. They chose a sextant.
Mr Mayson, now 20, has almost finished his apprenticeship, and reports tomorrow at Tauranga as acting third officer of the Kaijniro. The presentation was made on behalf of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union by the national president (Mr W. Martin).
