Canterbury Withstands Barrow Shield Challenge

Canterbury retained the Barrow Shield and its unbeaten representative record when it beat South Canterbury on Saturday night. With J. Armstrong not representing the province, the men’s team was not able to hold off the strong challenge from South Canterbury, and lost, 5-7. The women, however, had an easy 12-0 victory. V. N. Brightwell gave an excellent display to defeat T. Underdown before losing to B. Shewan, but he took a game from the South Island representative. M. A. Cox also gave a very determined display to extend Shewan. F. J. O’Gorman (South Canterbury) showed he is still a strong player when he beat N. B. Radford. R. J. Scott, playing his first major representative game, gave South Canterbury something to think about when he beat O’Gorman and K. Cullen in straight games.
