DEACONESS ORDER
Proposed Training In Auckland Proposals for the review ef the constitution of the deaconess order of the Methodist Church to bring it closer to that of the ministerial order were not adopted yesterday by the North Canterbury Methodist Synod. The proposals were by the New Zealand church’s commission on the ministry of women. The commission described the deaconesses as a ministerial rather than a lay order, and recommended they should be trained with ministers at Trinitv Theological College, Auckland, instead of at Deaconess House. Christchurch.
The Rev. R. G. Bell described the statement that it was a ministerial rather than a lay order as theologically and Seripturally unacceptable and inaccurate, and lacking in precision. The ministry must be theologically tied to the Sacraments, which the deaconess order was not. Furthermore, the new warden svstem of running Deaconess House had not yet fully been tried. The commission's statement was received but not adopted.
