Swimming DIVING AT FESTIVAL?
Committee’s Plans Although a Russian swimming team will not be coming to Christchurch for the PanPacific Arts Festival next year, the Canterbury Swimming Centre’s management committee has hopes of the proposed international triangular alving contest becoming a festival event. The diving series has been mooted for next February, with teams ot two from the United States. Australia and New lealand competing tn several centres on both sides of the Tasman. But at last night's meeting of the management committee. Miss Doreen Brown said the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia would not permit any competitors to leave the country before the Australian championships, to be held in late February. The chairman (Mr M. R Duckmanton) said the festival was to be held in the last week of February and the first two weeks of March. The committee decided to convey its Interest In the proposed aeries to the Wellington centre—which has offered to underwrite the New Zealand portion of the venture—with the provision that the dates fall within the period of tho arts festival. The committoe received a letter from the Federation of Swimming. U.s.i.k., expressing a wish that tho two countries could meet in competition in the future, although It was not possible for a Russian team to Visit New Zealand next year.
