De Valera Operation

(N.ZP. A.-Reuter—Copyright) DUBLIN, August 25. President de Valera of Ireland underwent an emergency operation yesterday. The 81-year-old head of State was said last night to be making “favourable progress.” The operation was for an obstruction caused by inguinal hernia. The President was admitted this morning for observation and X-ray. An inguinal hernia is not considered serious unless complications develop. President de Valera has been President of the Republic of Ireland since 1959.

Before that, except for two short periods while in opposition, he was Premier of his country back to 1932. No other international figure of modern times, apart from Dr. Salazar, of Portugal, has held office for so long.

Smugglers Caught.—The Indonesian Navy has arrested 175 smugglers and sunk 13 of their vessels in a campaign begun two weeks ago.—Djakarta, August 25.
