“Washday At The Pa”
Sir,—-As the book was for schools but about the Maori way of life, the Maori Women’s League had the right to speak, and as a result the book was withdrawn. Parents and teachers who saw the book felt they had the right to speak, also. We are a free country. It is a pity the subject has become a public issue, but it is much better to bring a thing out into the open where it can perish or live, than to bury it underground where it may become something totally different. The Maori people are human beings like ourselves, not quaint; simple, in my dictionary, means unaffected.— Yours, etc., A PAKEHA NEW ZEALANDER. August 25, 1964.
